Intranets and Extranets

Effectively an intranet is an information portal which can contain other functionality. For example, document management systems, customer relationship databases and information relating to stock and orders.

These are applications that run on the Internet, or at least use Internet technologies to operate. In common parlance the word intranet would be applicable to a system such as this contained entirely within a company's own network of computers. The word extranet however generally refers to the same system, but which allows individuals from outside the network and even other companies access to this information. Obviously security is a major issue and only those who have a right to visit are allowed in.
